A solitary gull drifts back and forth in the late afternoon, its gaze intent on the breaking surf beneath it.
If it were human it might be searching for unusual shells discarded by their deceased owners to add to a growing collection.
If it were a flying fish it might be searching for a safe place to dive back under the waves again.
The truth more likely is that the prize will be some unsuspecting critter about to become the evening’s dinner.
